86 - THE BULLET JUST MISSED HIS HEART | Ronald Reagan (US President) | 1911-2004
On March 30, 1981, President Ronald Reagan was shot outside the Washington Hilton Hotel when an assassin's bullet narrowly missed his heart.
Despite his injuries, Reagan's humor and courage reassured a worried nation saying to the doctors: “I hope you’re all Republicans.” To which the lead surgeon replied: “We’re all Republicans today, sir.”
Born in 1911 in Illinois, Reagan learned hard work through a modest upbringing and became known for courageously rescuing swimmers as a lifeguard. He worked as a radio announcer and later as a Hollywood actor, developing communication skills that earned him the nickname "The Great Communicator."
After serving in the Army during World War II and leading the Screen Actors Guild, Reagan entered politics, switching from Democrat to Republican. He became governor of California and, in 1980, the 40th president of the United States.
Reagan promoted free-market principles, confronted and ended Soviet communism, and inspired discouraged Americans with his optimism, leadership, humor, and belief in personal liberty and unencumbered opportunity.
