60 - THE BATTLE FOR WAKE ISLAND: AMERICA’S SECOND ALAMO | U.S. Marines | WWII
The Japanese high command assumed Wake Island would fall easily. On December 11, a Japanese invasion force steamed confidently toward the island. They expected the Americans to surrender without a fight.
That’s not what happened.
In December 1941, when America reeled from the Pearl Harbor defeat and one defeat after another across the Pacific, the Battle for Wake Island by this handful of courageous Americans stood as a victory every American could look to for inspiration.
“Remember Wake Island” became the cry of the American people in much the same way that “Remember the Alamo” had been shouted by soldiers under the command of General Sam Houston a century earlier.
And America remembered. What Wake Island told the world was unmistakable:
Though America was betrayed and wounded by their Japanese enemy, it was not beaten. And through sheer force of grit and raw courage, America would go on to victory.
