To leap with both feet into such a vital adventure requires that we gather, but more so, harness, the stories of our illustrious heroes and heroines. To do that successfully we must place them within a comprehendible historical setting. This takes work, my friends.

The Magi, usually referred to as The Three Wise Men of the Nativity, came to honor the “Newborn King” and to present valuable gifts, gifts for a king (gold, frankincense, and myrrh), and to learn if the prophecies were true. Apparently, they were not disappointed.
 
The Wise Men seemed to understand. They had done their homework!
 
For anyone on their own life-quest seeking Truth, it is hard to find a better historical example than these three special men. It’s foundational to the Christmas message.
 
Ultimate, eternal truth, not relative “truth” or what’s popular or “faddish” at the moment. And following always in the humble, quiet footsteps of Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar, who led the world to Christ with the most unselfish and humble intent and purpose.

Dr. Martin Luther King understood that a racist nation could never win the Cold War.
 
The world watched as the Soviet propaganda machine cranked up during the 1950s thru the 1970s, flooding the world with images of American race riots, segregation, and racial injustice. Because of America’s perceived injustices, Communists gained the advantage globally.
 
But with passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, discrimination laws based upon skin color were eliminated. The day Dr. King longed for—The Dream—when his children “would be judged by the content of their character.” He sacrificed his life for that dream.
 
Martin Luther King hammered the final spikes in the Communist coffin guaranteeing freedom/capitalism’s ultimate victory. Historically—and it’s eerily eye-opening—you can actually plot the slide of the Soviet Union when America finally began to eliminate long-standing racial injustices at home. I saw this firsthand while working in an official capacity overseas. It was stunning.
 
In fact, it was a miracle. This is the story of how that came about.

William Marshal, known famously as “The Peacemaker,” stepped forward when the Magna Carta—the first of the great freedom documents promoting individual liberty—was about to be discarded.
 
He rescued and enforced this pivotal pact of freedom but would never have had the influence necessary without his incredibly heroic and revered life.
 
For becoming “the world’s greatest knight” was not something anyone expected from a boy of his lowly status.
 
He began life with everyone he knew corrupt and self-serving. We would expect William Marshal to be the same. Yet, he would make his own choices and determine to adopt and refine his own code of loyalty to Christ and to England.
 
He became a man of honesty, chivalry, and clever, capable diplomacy. England, and by extension much of the rest of the world, would likely look very different today without his life of sacrifice and worthy service.
 
This is his incredible story…

"GIVE ME LIBERTY OR GIVE ME DEATH..."
 
With British attacks on the rise, the Second Virginia Assembly held an emergency session. PATRICK HENRY arrived in Richmond with a single goal. He rose from his seat with no notes in hand.
 
“If we wish to be free, we must fight!” He shouted. “An appeal to arms, and to the God of Hosts is all that is left us. For the next gale that sweeps from the North will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms. Our brethren are already in the field. Why stand we here idle?!”
 
Then came the legendary invocation that would echo across centuries: “I know not what course others may take; but as for me—give me liberty or give me death!”
 
By a narrow but decisive margin (65 to 60!) Virginia voted to prepare for war.
 
In that iconic lapboard church in Richmond, on that decisive day of March 23, 1775, American patriots arose from their slumber.

A Pilgrim child saw a naked figure watching their village from the trees. Some became afraid.
 
Finally, as the Pilgrims worked near the edge of a clearing, a native man stepped calmly out of the woods and strolled easily towards them wearing nothing but a loincloth.
 
What shocked them most was when he called out to them…in perfect English!
 
The man’s name was SQUANTO. And his miraculous story was so impossible at first no one believed it.
 
As well, Squanto had every right to hate these English Pilgrims. He could have left them to die, for he could see as he watched them that they didn’t know what they were doing.
 
But Squanto took pity on them and made a monumental decision, one that would change the course of history. He chose to help them.
 
And what happened next would not only save these struggling people, but more so provide a monumental miracle we celebrate today.
 
It’s called Thanksgiving.

It’s a true injustice when our illustrious heroes are purposely “cancelled” because of the too-common curse of professional jealousy and power politics.
 
Sadly, it’s even more prevalent today and why a large majority of Americans no longer trust our media.
 
For one of America’s finest cryptographers, a man who singlehandedly saved the US Navy’s Pacific Fleet and delivered the Japanese Navy to American dive bombers at the Battle of Midway, was actually punished for his life-saving accomplishments.
 
His name was Captain Joseph J. Rochefort, a brilliant, yet soft-spoken Navy officer who preferred fuzzy slippers to regulation dress shoes and worked at all hours—sometimes 24/7—in his bathrobe.
 
There, in what he called “the Dungeon,” “Station HYPO” at Pearl Harbor, he and his team successfully broke the rock-solid Japanese naval codes wide-open, turning the tide of war.
 
This is his incredible, inspiring story.

In April of 1861, the War Between the States broke out.
 
Nine-year-old Johnny Lincoln Clem ran away from home to join the Union Army. But Johnny found the Army not particularly interested in recruiting a boy.
 
The commander of the 3rd Ohio Regiment told him he “wasn't enlisting infants just yet,” and sent him home. Johnny, then headed to the 22nd Michigan Regiment nearby.
 
Determined, Johnny tagged along and demonstrated his skill as a drummer boy so professionally the commander allowed him to stay with the regiment.
 
At the same time, a fourteen-year-old boy joined the Union Army in late 1861, Company D, 8th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers. What he fought for was “to free the blacks” and “save the Union.”
 
His name was George Preston Nock. He was my Great-Grandfather.
 
Their willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice is why this nation is what it is today. It’s why we’ve become an Ensign of Liberty to the world, that Shining City on A Hill that President Reagan spoke of so reverently.
 
These two related, true stories that overlap—representing so many heroes, as well—show us why we remember Veterans Day this November.

As an orphan in the 1930s, Francis (Frank) Sherman Currey often stared across the Hudson River at the US Military Academy at West Point standing high on the hills overlooking the river.
 
As he watched the men march, he longed to join with them, to be accepted into this prestigious institution. Still, he knew that because of his poor, disadvantaged life, such a dream could never be achieved.
 
But this was no ordinary boy. Francis (Frank) Currey would not let his poverty and lack of education deter him from serving his country, especially when America was attacked in World War II.
 
Joining the Army, Frank soon found himself in Europe with the 30th Infantry Division and facing the full might of Nazi Germany in the Battle of the Bulge.
 
The men of Frank’s platoon fully expected to be annihilated by the large, advancing German 1st SS Panzer Division. But in the heat of battle Sergeant Frank Currey refused to retreat but did what he had to in order to survive.
 
This orphaned kid from New York gathered his weapons, and moving quickly, did what no one thought possible…

Crouched deep underground within the bowels of the massive building, inhaling putrid air without complaint, and in the meager light of a single candle, the Union prisoners worked with a purpose.
.
Among them was LIEUTENANT JACOB MERRITT, just twenty-three-years-old.
.
Jacob lay on his belly in the cramped tunnel, chipping at the earthen wall, the opening just twenty inches wide. The tunnel began in the new kitchen.
.
The prisoners moved the stove and dislodging select bricks allowing access inside the chimney providing access below to the old, sealed off kitchen in the basement. But this was also known as “Rat Hell.”
.
Inch by painful inch, the tunnel grew longer. From the digging, Jacob’s hands blistered, his fingernails split.
.
Digging without his clothes (to keep any sign of dirt from them) the aggressive rats plagued him, biting his bare skin, running over his legs, back, even his hair.
.
But his passion to escape drove him forward…

Elizabeth Van Lew was determined Richmond would fall, the sooner the better.

Beneath her basket of groceries were secret Union dispatches written skillfully in invisible ink, folded innocuously like bookmarks between sheets of household shopping accounts.

Two Confederate soldiers strolled past, rifles slung lazily across their shoulders.
.
The soldiers tipped their hats and moved on, unsuspecting that the well-known local woman known as “Crazy Bet,” was in fact one of President Lincoln’s most devastating spies.
.
Who was this daring woman who fully understood she would be immediately hung if caught as a spy for the North?
.
But Elizabeth Van Lew viewed the Confederate rebellion as an abomination, an affront to the sacrifice of America’s Founding Fathers, men and women who gave their lives establishing a God-centered, free republic.

So, when starving Union prisoners began to fill Richmond’s disease-infested Libby Prison to overflowing, she knew what she had to do...
